Renders done at STEL Design for the launch of the Pixel Watch 2. Our collaboration efforts resulted in 361+ unique assets delivered- which ranged from High Poly Modeling, Orthographic renderings, and Dynamic storefront banners for physical Google Store locations.

Preparing the Model

CAD Rebuild

Model Assessment

Models received from Google’s ID team are assessed for render purposes. CAD is quality-checked to ensure geometry is clean.

Once the model is built we create a “rig” that allows full control over the 3D model’s movement. This stage is important so that different positions can be created of the watch.

Material Development

Samples

Generally, physical samples are sent so we can accurately assess the material qualities in hand.

Material Nodes

Some models require more detail in materials. This metal link band requires additional material development through material nodes. Generally, utilizing an image or procedural texture helps improve material detail and realism.

Full Body Of work

Once the models are ready, all the CAD is imported into Keyshot for rendering. This is where virtual materials are developed for accuracy to the physical product.

HDRI Lighting

Each component is lit through a process called HDRI lighting. Essentially the white shapes (which are lights) are positioned in 3D space (represented by a flat 2D image). Once each part has a lighting environment the render passes are composited in Photoshop.

When geometry needs to be optimized for CGI purposes we go through a process of re-meshing or sometimes rebuilding the model in a polygonal model format. Then ensures geometry is ready to be used for high resolution purposes.
